Kent State University’s online Master of Music in Music Education (MMME) program is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing online students to tailor their studies to their interests. While the program is fully online, students have the unique opportunity to participate in immersive, on-campus summer electives that provide hands-on experiences in specialized areas of music education.

For Summer 2025, Kent State offers engaging elective courses on campus, allowing students to refine their craft, collaborate with fellow educators, and develop new instructional techniques.

Summer 2025 On-Campus Elective Offerings

AOSA Teacher Education Courses levels 1, 2, and 3 

  • 10 Days of Instruction: June 23-28, and June 30-July 3
  • 3 credits/6 Continuing Education Units

Featuring American Orff-Schulwerk certified instructors in Pedagogy, Recorder, and Movement, these courses are sequenced to introduce you to the Orff-Schulwerk approach and how to apply it to the general music or choral classroom.

Curriculum Scope and Sequence in an Orff-inspired Classroom

  • 8:30am-4pm June 30 - July 3   
  • 4 CEUs (available for CEUs only, no credit)

This course is appropriate for anyone with a music degree and an interest in Orff pedagogy for music teaching and learning. Orff curriculum course is designed for teachers to collaboratively create their elementary music curriculum. The class will use small-group collaboration and peer teaching  to explore the classroom application of teaching strategies for sequential music skills and concepts across the elementary grades.

Why take it? Whether you’re new to Orff or looking to advance your skills, these courses provide certification and practical teaching strategies that can be applied immediately in the classroom.

Caribbean Steelband: Performance and Cultural Traditions

  • July 7-11, 9:00-5:00 daily
  • 3 credits/6 Continuing Education Units

Specific traditions and genres studied may include but are not limited to pan, calypso, soca, Latin, bomb tunes, carnival, and tamboo-bamboo--appropriate for music educators at any level and Steelband enthusiasts.

Instrumental and Choral Conducting Intensive

  • July 14-18, 9:00-5:00 daily
  • 3 credits/6 Continuing Education Units

The Summer Conducting Intensive is a week-long course for music educators, graduate- students, and other aspiring conductors who wish to grow as artists, teachers, musicians, and leaders. It features daily seminars, workshops, conducting master classes, and round-table discussions.
