Music educators play a vital role in shaping students’ creativity, self-expression, and appreciation for the arts. However, as the educational landscape evolves, so do the demands on music teachers to incorporate new teaching strategies, stay current with emerging trends, and create more engaging learning experiences for their students. Dr. Jay Dorfman, professor and coordinator of Music Education at Kent State University, recently shared his insights at the 2024 NAfME Biennial Music Research and Teacher Education Conference, shedding light on the complex career transitions that music teacher educators (MTEs) experience. His presentation explored the phases and decisions that MTEs face, particularly in the middle and late stages of their careers, using the Push-Pull-Moor (PPM) Model as a framework.

Growing up in Akron, Sarah Labovitz, D.M.A., was surrounded by music. Her dad sang to the radio. Her mom played guitar. Her siblings excelled in music. She excelled in music. With a lengthy list of accomplishments across numerous states, she recently returned to “the heart of it all” as the new director of the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music at Kent State University.

Benjamin Lorenzo is an associate professor of music and the Director of Bands at Kent State University’s Glauser School of Music, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble, teaches conducting, and provides leadership for university bands. He also teaches a summer elective for the Online Master of Music in Music Education.

Dr. Herbert (Butch) Marshall is an Assistant Professor for the Online Master of Music in Music Education.

Calling all music teachers!

The Ohio Music Education Association’s (OMEA) Professional Development Conference was earlier this month and music educators from all over the state traveled to Columbus for this three-day conference. OMEA is the third largest Music Education Association conference in the nation with over 8,000 total in attendance.

Diane Petrella, dean of the College of the Arts, announced that professor and Vocal Area coordinator Timothy Culver would serve as the Interim Director of the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music effective July 1, 2022.
