We connected with Bethany Loncher, a graduate of Kent State University’s Online M.Ed. in Educational Technology program, to learn more about her experience, career journey, and advice for future students.

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Bethany Loncher, and I’m based in Lakewood, Ohio. I graduated from Kent State University’s Online M.Ed. in Educational Technology program in Spring 2024.

Before starting the program, I had a background in education, photography, and graphic design. I was also part of the technology team at the school where I was teaching, which really sparked my interest in how technology can impact student learning.

Why did you choose this program at Kent State?

I chose Kent State because the program blends instructional design, technology integration, and real-world application—all in a fully online format.

At the time, I knew I wanted more flexibility in my career. Educational technology felt like the perfect way to combine creativity with learning, and this program felt like the right place to build those skills in a meaningful way.

How did the online format fit into your life?

The online, asynchronous format made the degree possible for me.

I was able to log in when it worked best for my schedule, continue working full-time, and still maintain a balance outside of school. I also loved that I could immediately apply what I was learning in my elementary classroom, which made the experience feel very relevant and practical.

What were some of the most valuable skills or experiences you gained?

I gained a strong foundation in instructional design, learning platforms, digital content creation, and evaluating educational tools.

Some of the most impactful courses I took were Instructional Design, Designing Visuals for Education, and Managing Technology in Schools and Programs. These courses helped me build skills that I now use every day in my current role.

What was your experience like with faculty in the program?

The faculty were incredible—approachable, supportive, and very knowledgeable.

Their feedback pushed me to think beyond just completing assignments. They encouraged me to really focus on the learner experience and understand the “why” behind each design decision.

Even now, I feel like I could reach out to any of my professors for support or guidance.

Did you feel connected to other students in an online program?

Yes, definitely.

Even though the program is fully online, there was a strong sense of community. I had the opportunity to collaborate with peers from different professional backgrounds, which gave me new perspectives and ideas.

I still think back to those conversations when I’m working through design or technology-related challenges.

How has this degree impacted your career?

This degree gave me the confidence and clarity to move into a more strategic, technology-focused role.

I recently transitioned out of the classroom and now work as an Education Coordinator and Client Relations Specialist with ViaMonde. The program helped position me as someone who understands both how people learn and how digital systems support that process.

What advice would you give to future students?

Choose a program that fits your life—but still challenges you.

Kent State stands out because it combines strong faculty, real-world relevance, and a supportive online experience. It allowed me to grow professionally while still managing everything else in my life.
