Join us this summer! Kent State University’s School of Music offers intensive summer electives that can be applied to Kent State Online’s 100% online Master of Music in Music Education (MMME).

These short-format courses allow you to:

  • build practical, classroom-ready skills

Courses are offered for credit or non-credit (CEUs) and meet on campus at Kent’s Center for Performing Arts, with housing and parking available.

Music Education Summer 2026 Courses

AOSA Teacher Education Courses – Levels I, II & III

10 Days of Instruction:
June 22–26 and June 29–July 3 | 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
3 credits / 6 CEUs

Featuring American Orff-Schulwerk Association certified instructors in pedagogy, recorder, and movement, these sequenced courses introduce educators to the Orff-Schulwerk approach and its application in general music and choral classrooms. This highly interactive course is ideal for teachers seeking creative, student-centered music instruction.

Engaging Students with Disabilities Using Percussion and Movement: A Special Need for Music

July 6–10 | 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
3 credits / 5 CEUs

Designed for anyone working with learners who have disabilities or learning differences, this course focuses on hands-on percussion, movement, and recorded music in an inclusive, interactive group setting. No formal music background is required.

Movement and Folk Dance Using Weikart’s Approach

July 13–17 | 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
3 credits / 5 CEUs

This course introduces Phyllis Weikart’s approach to international folk dance and movement-based instruction. It is appropriate for preservice and in-service educators (music, physical education, and others) seeking hands-on, active teaching strategies.

A Music Learning Theory Approach to Choral Music

10 Days of Instruction:
July 13–17 and July 20–24 | 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
3 credits / 6 CEUs

Taught by GIML-certified instructors, this course applies Gordon’s Music Learning Theory to the K–12 choral classroom. Participants explore a research-based approach to music acquisition and practical classroom implementation.
