Preparing Confident Leaders for Public Service

Kent State Online Master of Public Administration (MPA) alumnus Eli Kalil built his career by combining strong time management, meaningful connections, and a broad foundation in public administration. The Kent State Online MPA program is designed to prepare professionals for leadership roles across government, nonprofit, and public-sector organizations. In this alumni Q&A, Eli shares how the online MPA supported his professional growth, strengthened his leadership approach, and opened doors to new opportunities in public service.

What did you find most valuable about earning your MPA online at Kent State?

The Kent State MPA gave me the foundation I needed to navigate the public sector with confidence. I didn’t graduate as a subject-matter expert in one narrow area, but I developed a strong understanding across many areas of public administration. That broad knowledge base is critical when you’re working with diverse stakeholders and making complex decisions.

How did the online format support your success as a working professional?

Time management was essential. While completing the program, I was working full time and balancing a personal relationship. There wasn’t a single “aha” moment—it was about maintaining a structured schedule, staying disciplined, and still allowing time to decompress and enjoy life. The flexibility of the online format made that balance possible.

What resources outside the classroom helped you get the most from the program?

Career Services and Alumni Services played a huge role in my success. Through Kent State Career Services and Kent State Alumni Engagement, students gain access to resume support, mentorship, and long-term professional connections. Career Services helped me refine my resume multiple times—something many students underestimate the value of. Alumni Services connected me with mentors and professionals who helped me think more clearly about my career path after graduation.

How did you stay connected with faculty and classmates in an online environment?

This may sound simple, but email made a big difference. Faculty in the MPA program were incredibly responsive and always willing to help when questions came up. That level of access and support helped foster a real sense of connection, even in an online setting.

In what ways did the MPA shape your leadership and decision-making skills?

The program helped me understand that effective leadership doesn’t mean knowing everything—it means understanding who the key contributors are and bringing them together around a common goal. That perspective has been invaluable in navigating complex decision-making in the public sector.

How has the Kent State network influenced your career since graduating?

The KSU network has been one of the most powerful assets of my MPA experience. Kent State’s alumni network provides graduates with lasting professional connections across Ohio and beyond. I continue to rely on my Kent State connections, especially within Ohio. Earning the degree also allowed me to apply for the Presidential Management Fellowship, which required a graduate degree and became a major catalyst for my career growth.

Who do you think is a great fit for the Kent State Online MPA program?

The program is ideal for individuals who aspire to become high-level public administrators or executives. Its broad approach helps students identify their strengths and recognize areas where they want to grow, which is incredibly valuable for long-term career success.

What advice would you give to someone considering an online MPA?

Your online degree carries just as much value as a traditional one. While there may still be misconceptions about online education, my MPA has served me extremely well. Embrace the flexibility of the program, but stay committed to learning and growth from day one.
