Kent State University is once again at the top tier when it comes to exhibiting leading practices and supporting post-military students, receiving the 2021-2022 Military Friendly® School designation for its Kent Campus1. This is the 12th year in a row that the Kent Campus has received the Military Friendly School honor. The Kent Campus received a bronze-level status, meaning it scored within 30% of the 10th best school in its category.

Military Friendly is the military ratings division of VIQTORY, a service-disabled, veteran-owned business that also serves as the publisher of G.I. Jobs and Military Spouse. Military Friendly rates companies and colleges based on their programs to recruit and retain military veterans as both employees and students.

In addition to the Kent Campus, the university’s Trumbull and Tuscarawas campuses have received the 2021-2022 Military Friendly School designation.

“This shows that Kent State University has been consistently supporting its military-connected population for the past 12 years,” said Joshua Rider, executive director of Kent State’s Center for Adult and Veteran Services. “An award like this is an indicator that the institution is staying on top of trends when it comes to serving this student population.”

The list of Military Friendly Schools ratings is evaluated through both public data about an institution and proprietary data gathered through the free Military Friendly Schools survey beginning each year in July. The annual, data-driven Military Friendly Schools survey assessment is offered at no cost to more than 8,800 institutions nationwide.

Schools participating in the survey are held to a higher standard than in previous years thanks in part to improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an independent research firm and an advisory council of independent leaders in higher education and military recruitment community.

Rider is quick to credit the university as a whole for the success in the programming offered.

“The leadership of the Division of Student Affairs continues to make this a priority population to engage, support and retain,” he said. “The university as a whole is committed to supporting these students in academic advising areas, student accessibility support and centralized benefits processing services, just to name a few.”

Despite over a decade of high distinctions, Rider is not resting on his laurels.

“We are doing really great stuff,” he said. “But there is always room for improvement, and the goal here is to continuously improve.”
