For Linda E. Ethier, music is more than a subject—it’s a lifelong passion and a powerful tool for connection, growth, and leadership. As an accomplished music educator and proud graduate of Kent State University’s 100% online Master of Music in Music Education program, Ethier has dedicated her career to empowering the next generation of musicians. Her story is one of perseverance, purpose, and the profound impact of music education in and beyond the classroom.

A Lifelong Dedication to Music and Teaching

Kent State University alumna Linda E. Ethier has spent more than 30 years inspiring students through music education. Named one of 50 Teachers Who Make a Difference1, Ethier began her journey with a passion for the violin and a commitment to connecting with students through music. While earning her 100% online Master of Music in Music Education from Kent State University, she deepened her understanding of teaching practices, leadership, and the power of musical collaboration. Today, she serves as the orchestra director at Sharon Public Schools in Massachusetts, where she continues to build strong relationships and meaningful musical experiences for students.

Transforming a Program Through Passion and Perseverance

When Ethier joined Sharon Public Schools in 2012, the orchestra program had just 30 students. Under her leadership, the program has grown to include more than 80 students across multiple ensembles. She attributes the program’s success to listening closely to students and families and creating an environment where every student feels valued. As she notes:

“Music teaches more than just how to play an instrument. It teaches discipline, collaboration and perseverance.”

These life lessons, she explains, often follow students well beyond graduation.

Navigating Change in the Modern Classroom

Ethier recognizes the evolving challenges educators face today—from increased scrutiny to rapid technological change. Still, she remains focused on her students and adapts her approach to meet their needs. She credits her ability to evolve as a teacher in part to her graduate education at Kent State, which helped her cultivate resilience and creativity in the classroom.

Leading by Example

Ethier continues to shape the future of music education through her work as a teacher, mentor, and leader. She plans to serve on the SEMSBA executive board and continue conducting regional ensembles. Her legacy lives on in the students she has taught—and in the confidence and joy they carry with them through music.

Why Her Story Matters to Kent State Online

Ethier credits her ability to evolve as a teacher in part to her graduate education at Kent State, which helped her cultivate resilience and creativity in the classroom. “I truly loved the rigorous MMME program,” she shared, reflecting on the depth and challenge of her experience.
