A proud Kentuckian and self-described “hillbilly,” his work blends scholarship, creativity, and personal experience to understand how rural and Appalachian culture shapes learning in higher education.

Holding degrees in Communications and Theatre from the University of Kentucky and a Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations of Education from Kent State University, Dr. Dees brings a unique perspective to his teaching and research. His interests include the aesthetic dimensions of teaching and learning, how the human brain processes knowledge, and the role of culture in shaping educational experiences.

He is a recipient of Kent State’s Outstanding Teaching Award and Gannon University’s Teacher of the Year honor.
