Dr. David M. Dees has spent more than 25 years exploring one enduring question: What is quality teaching? A proud Kentuckian and self-described “hillbilly,” his work blends scholarship, creativity, and personal experience to understand how rural and Appalachian culture shapes learning in higher education.

Holding degrees in Communications and Theatre from the University of Kentucky and a Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations of Education from Kent State University, Dr. Dees brings a unique perspective to his teaching and research. His interests include the aesthetic dimensions of teaching and learning, how the human brain processes knowledge, and the role of culture in shaping educational experiences.

He is a recipient of Kent State’s Outstanding Teaching Award and Gannon University’s Teacher of the Year honor.

Elizabeth “Lisa” Testa is an associate professor in the School of Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum Studies at Kent State University. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate coursework on teaching and learning, as well as English education and literacy courses. She works closely with many local K-12 partners, providing opportunities for pre-service teachers to gain clinical field experiences in secondary schools. Her research interests include studying teacher education and pre-service teachers’ conceptions of teaching writing.

Dr. Astrid N. Sambolín Morales is an Assistant Professor in Kent State Online’s 100% Online Master of Education degree in Cultural Foundations. She received her PhD in Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity from the University of Colorado Boulder and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research provides a more nuanced picture of the agency, resistance, and empowerment enacted by displaced Puerto Rican m(others) in the U.S., and her work was funded by several grants, including the University of Colorado Natural Hazards Center, the BUENO Center for Multicultural Education, the URBAN Research Network, and the NAEd Spencer Foundation.
