Kent State University is celebrating an exciting milestone—the graduation of the first cohort from its Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program, which launched in Fall 2023. Nearly 20 students from across Northeast Ohio walked across the stage this spring, equipped with the skills, passion, and purpose to serve their communities.

Reaching Students Where They Are

The BSW program’s unique hybrid format makes social work education more accessible than ever before. By offering a combination of online and Zoom-based courses through Kent State’s regional campuses in Ashtabula, Salem, and Tuscarawas, the program reaches students in underserved and rural communities—places where social workers are needed most.

“Our students span a wide range of backgrounds and life stages,” said Matt Butler, program director. “Many are adult learners or first-generation college students who would not have had access to a program like this without the flexibility we offer.”

Building Community Across Campuses

Despite being geographically spread out, students in the BSW program participate in active learning and collaborative projects that help foster a strong sense of community.

“Even though we weren’t physically on the same campus, we always felt connected,” said Amanda Good, a member of the first graduating class. “The program created an environment where we could grow together and support one another.”

Addressing a National Need

The program also aims to address a critical shortage of social workers in rural areas. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 60% of rural Americans live in areas underserved by mental health professionals—yet only about 20% of social workers are employed in these communities.

Kent State’s BSW curriculum is designed with this need in mind. Students graduate prepared to serve marginalized and underserved populations, advocate for social justice, and make a meaningful difference where it’s needed most.

Continuing to Grow

With approximately 100 students currently enrolled, the BSW program continues to grow in size and impact. The program empowers students to build professional identities as changemakers, with coursework that integrates ethical practice, cultural competence, and real-world experience.

Sitting on my deck on a sunny day as summer begins to fade into fall, I can see a single thread of a web spanning the large opening of the deck stairs from rail post to rail post. I had sat down to write a blog post about National Online Learning Day but instead found myself contemplating the amount of ambition a spider must have to decide to build a 10-foot-wide web. Just as I was about to get back to work, I noticed that this feat was being undertaken by a minuscule spider who was now working on another thread halfway across this immense expanse. I watched for a while, torn between being impressed that such a tiny arachnid could accomplish this amazing feat and feeling sad for this little guy because somebody was clearly going to walk through this web before the end of the day.
