Each year, the United States Distance Learning Association presents National Distance Learning Week (NDLW), a global week-long celebration of digital and distance learning designed to generate awareness, highlight best practices, and engage educators, institutions, learners, and organizations across K-20, corporate, government, and military sectors.1

In 2025, the theme is “The Great AI Disequilibrium”, focusing on how rapid developments in artificial intelligence are reshaping teaching, learning, access, and equity in online and hybrid environments.

What to Expect During National Distance Learning Week

  • Free virtual webinars, panels, and networking sessions each day of the week.
  • Daily “Online Daily Show” talk-shows (11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. ET) covering trending ed-tech topics.
  • Deep-dive sessions on AI in education, neurodiversity and digital learning, student agency, peer connection in online learning, virtual field trips, and building social capital for learners. (For example: Monday’s panel “AI: The Great Disequilibrium” and Tuesday’s “AI: Friend or Foe for Learning & Development?”)
  • Access to recorded sessions (free for USDLA members) and a chance to engage with presenters and peers globally.

Why It Matters

In a rapidly evolving educational landscape, distance learning offers access, flexibility, and innovation. NDLW provides an annual spotlight to:

  • Recognize how online and hybrid modalities support working professionals, adult learners, rural and non-traditional students, and lifelong learning.
  • Share and refine best practices for digital pedagogy, learner engagement, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Explore how emerging technologies—like AI—can enhance or disrupt learning, and how institutions can respond thoughtfully.
  • Strengthen community among educators, instructional designers, support staff, and learners who operate outside the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom.

This year, discussions of criminal justice reform in this country have changed a great deal. In our presidential primaries, a record number of Democratic candidates’ platforms included the importance of reform.1 The COVID-19 pandemic and recent social justice protests have brought to light ways in which our entire system, including criminal justice and law enforcement, disproportionately affects poor communities and minorities.2

When you tune in to a local weather forecast or reach your destination with the help of a GPS device, you’re reaping the benefits of geographic information system (GIS) remote sensing technology. GIS was first applied in the 1960s to collect and analyze data regarding land usage. Today, there are a myriad of GIS applications ranging from urban planning to predicting the environmental effects of climate change. GIS technology continues to develop, creating an ever-increasing need for skilled professionals.1
There are many reasons to choose to pursue a career in the public sector rather than in the business world. Often, people are drawn to public or nonprofit careers because doing so gives them an opportunity to do good and enact change for the better, rather than just increasing profits for a corporation. But even if you know you want to work in government or at a nonprofit organization, the exact path you follow can vary greatly.
If you’re researching either geographic information systems or geographic information science, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish one from the other. Although geographic information science is often confused with geographic information systems, and the two terms are closely related, they are not perfectly interchangeable.1
