Courses

The courses are listed in the recommended sequence order. You can choose between the last two, HPM 63003 and HPM 60192, to complete the healthcare compliance certificate program. Each course earns 3 credits toward your credential, and if you choose to earn an MPH, they will carry the same credit.

HPM 63008 Healthcare Privacy and Security

This course introduces students to the fundamental concerns addressed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The course will explore the Privacy and Security Rules, and the HITECH Act Provisions, Enforcement, and Omnibus Final Rule. By the end of this course, you will have a comprehensive understanding of healthcare privacy and security.

HPM 62017 Healthcare Law and Regulation

This course covers the underlying theories behind healthcare law and regulation as well as specific provisions affecting the organization, delivery, and payment of primary health services. Administrators and clinicians will gain a basic understanding of the regulatory environment and provisions impacting their practice in one of the most heavily regulated industries in the United States.

HPM 63009 Healthcare Compliance I

In this course, students will examine the historical background of compliance programs and the process involved in developing a compliance program primarily based in the healthcare system.

HPM 63010 Healthcare Compliance II

This course focuses on the compliance functions within a healthcare operation that implement, operate, and evaluate the existing compliance program. Students must complete HPM 63009, Healthcare Compliance I before taking this course.

HPM 63003 Health Care Systems

In this course, students will examine the conceptual basis for the U.S. healthcare system; its historical origins; the structures, resources, and processes of care; how quality and costs are supported and constrained; and the impact of recent legislation. Students may take either this course or HPM 60192 to complete the Healthcare Compliance Graduate Certificate program.

HPM 60192 Applied Practice Experience in HPM

Observation and participation in healthcare compliance activities of a public health agency, hospital or other approved organization. The student completes the field experience with joint supervision from the university and an approved organization or agency. The practicum requires 150 contact hours and the topics will be approved by the program coordinator in conjunction with the student and site preceptor. Students may take either this course or HPM 63003 to complete the Healthcare Compliance Graduate Certificate program.
