Kent State University’s 100% fully online Bachelor’s of Insurance Studies program recently partnered with industry leaders to give high school students a firsthand look at careers in insurance—an industry full of opportunity, innovation, and real-world impact.

Through a collaborative experience with the Ohio Insurance Institute and National Interstate Insurance Company, students from Akron Public Schools spent the day immersed in the insurance industry.

A Day of Hands-On Learning

Students kicked off the experience with a tour of National Interstate’s headquarters, gaining insight into how insurance organizations operate and the wide range of roles that support the industry.

The day continued with engaging breakout sessions focused on:

  • Career pathways in insurance
  • Relevant degree programs
  • Long-term benefits and growth opportunities within the field

These discussions helped students better understand how their interests and skills could translate into meaningful careers.

Putting Ideas Into Action

One of the most impactful parts of the day came from small-group collaboration. Students worked together to design and present their own insurance programs—applying critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity to real-world challenges.

This hands-on experience allowed students to move beyond theory and begin thinking like professionals, solving problems, and presenting ideas with confidence.

Before you commit to an advanced degree such as a master’s of public administration, it’s important to consider whether it will be worth the investment of your time and money. For some people, an MPA program can be a life-changing experience that prepares them for professional success and greater personal fulfillment. For others, an MPA may not be the right choice.
Education is not only about learning skills and information. Education—whether formal schooling or learning through life experience—is deeply embedded in every society. Education plays a number of roles in society as well. Examining the relationships between varied kinds of education and society is what you will be asked to do when studying cultural foundations of education.
As noted elsewhere on this site, “Broadly speaking, the public sector refers to any part of a state or national economy that is tied to public programs or services and is controlled by the government.” You may find public sector employment opportunities in the military, law enforcement, organizations managing infrastructure (public roads, bridges, tunnels, water supply, sewers, electrical grids, telecommunications, and so on), departments of public transit or public education, and in healthcare and the government itself.
