Earning a doctorate is a significant commitment — especially for professionals balancing full-time work, family responsibilities, and leadership roles. For many, the question isn’t whether they want to pursue an Ed.D., but how they can realistically fit it into their lives.

Kent State’s 100% online, cohort-based Doctor of Education in Interprofessional Leadership (Ed.D.) is intentionally designed to support busy professionals by combining flexibility with a strong sense of community — so students can advance their careers without putting everything else on hold.

A Day in the Life of an Online Ed.D. Student

While no two students have identical schedules, many Ed.D. learners share a similar rhythm:

  • Engaging with course materials asynchronously during evenings or early mornings
  • Applying coursework directly to real challenges in their workplace
  • Collaborating with peers on projects that reflect diverse professional perspectives

Because coursework is designed for working adults, learning doesn’t feel disconnected from daily responsibilities — it becomes part of how students think, lead, and problem-solve in their professional roles.

Balancing Work, Study, and Life

Flexibility is a defining feature of Kent State’s online Ed.D. program. The fully online format allows students to:

  • Continue working full-time
  • Maintain family and personal commitments
  • Study from anywhere without relocating

Rather than requiring students to step away from their careers, the program is structured to build on their professional experience — making learning both manageable and immediately relevant.

Why the Cohort Model Matters

While flexibility is essential, community is what sustains momentum. In the cohort model, students move through the program together, forming meaningful academic and professional relationships.

Cohort-based learning offers:

  • Consistent peer support and accountability
  • Rich discussion informed by diverse sectors and roles
  • Opportunities to learn from others’ leadership challenges and successes
  • A shared sense of progress toward long-term goals

For many students, the cohort becomes a trusted professional network that lasts well beyond graduation.

Learning Together — Across Professions

The Ed.D. in Interprofessional Leadership brings together professionals from education, healthcare, nonprofit, human services, and other sectors. This interprofessional environment deepens learning by exposing students to different perspectives, organizational structures, and leadership contexts.

Students learn not only from faculty, but from one another — strengthening their ability to collaborate, communicate, and lead across disciplines.

How Kent State Supports Working Professionals

Kent State’s Ed.D. program is designed to support experienced professionals navigating demanding careers alongside doctoral study. The program offers structured support through:

  • Faculty with real-world leadership and professional experience
  • Clear course sequencing, milestones, and expectations
  • Research, writing, and academic support resources
  • A thoughtfully designed online learning environment that promotes engagement and collaboration

Together, these elements help students stay focused, confident, and connected as they progress through the program.
