Kent State University’s support for its military-connected community continues to embody leadership and inclusivity as the Kent Campus has been named an official 2022-2023 Military Spouse Friendly® School by Viqtory.

Viqtory uses data from its annual Military Friendly® Schools survey to indicate which campuses are considered the most supportive to military-connected students and their spouses. Out of 1,800 participating schools, Kent State was one of 665 to receive the Military Friendly School designation in March, and the university is now one of 346 institutions to earn the Military Spouse Friendly School recognition.

Institutions that receive the Military Spouse Friendly School honor are considered the leading providers of postsecondary education experiences for spouses of service members. Kent State is just one of three higher education institutions - public or private - in Northeast Ohio to receive this designation.

Joshua Rider, executive director of Kent State’s Center for Adult and Veteran Services, accepted the recognition on behalf of Kent State.

“Kent State is committed to supporting not only the veterans and service members but also their spouses who are seeking to pursue higher education,” he said. “They are offered the exact same high level of customer service and benefits processing that veterans receive for their benefits.”

Along with the commitment to supporting its military-connected students, the university is committed to the betterment of the adult student body in general.

“Additionally, we have built a comprehensive support system here at Kent State that supports our adult learners and parenting students,” Rider said. “These are all components that helped in our attainment of this designation.”

In addition to being designated as a Military Friendly School for the 13th consecutive year and earning a Gold Award for 2022-2023, Kent State received Ohio’s new Collegiate Purple Star designation for its support for veteran and military students in late May.

The Military Spouse Friendly Schools list is created using data sources from federal agencies and survey information from organizations to create a comprehensive guide for military spouses looking to further their education. Scores are based on such factors as an institution’s career planning resources, academic credibility, academic support, military family support, and flexibility.

As the list becomes more comprehensive and prestigious, Kent State aims to continue its support of the military community on campus, including spouses.
