Online MPH in Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS)

Kent State University’s online Master of Public Health (MPH) in Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) program helps you to understand the person, the behavior and the environment, learning how these factors intersect in public health. As you study, you can build a portfolio of skills that demonstrate the deep understanding and practical experiences you gained in the program that may be applicable in your current career and future professional opportunities.

Our faculty aims to prepare you to develop programs that prevent disease, promote health and health equity, and manage chronic illnesses. This specialization is designed to teach you how to evaluate and intervene on a multitude of different health issues both locally and internationally, while integrating social factors that improve the quality of life for those in your community.

MPH in SBS Program Outcomes

Our online MPH in SBS program helps to prepare students with an interdisciplinary understanding of the theoretical basis of health behavior in populations across the lifespan, as well as how to apply theoretical principles to design effective behavior change strategies.

After completing the program, our students can:

  • Evaluate and apply basic social, behavioral and biological theories that affect health behaviors
  • Analyze and appreciate the role of the social determinants of health in the onset of and solution to public health problems
  • Adopt and utilize the principles of ethics, social justice and advocacy in improving the health of diverse populations in a culturally competent manner
  • Analyze and apply methods of addressing emerging health, social and behavioral issues in public health

Career Outcomes with an MPH in SBS

The online MPH in Social and Behavioral Sciences program is designed to help you learn the skills needed to create community-based health behavior and population health improvement programs. Our graduates are often better able to design, implement and evaluate public health interventions in a variety of settings—including clinical and nonprofit settings and public agencies—and for a variety of populations—including families, communities, schools, the workplace, and law enforcement or criminal justice organizations.
